As part of Black history month we are launching a new book as part of the Award.
The Sunny Side by Belinda Garry (a local writer). It is a colourful tale of friendships and culture – follow Daisy’s exciting summer holiday, travelling around Hull, with Sonny and their group of friends. Meet Uncle Neville and hear about the games they played. A story inspired by the childhoods and upbringing of Windrush generation descendants. Enjoy the games we used to play and the richness of our cultures.
This book adds to the five section Award which can be completed at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels (dependant on age) for the 8-12yrs age group. It is ready to use and there is guidance included.
It is free and gives you the opportunity to help children develop their skills, knowledge and creativity, but also have their achievements recognised.
The Caribbean Experience; Windrush booklet points you in the right direction for completing this section of the Lord Mayor’s Award. You can use it to broaden knowledge and understanding. There are things to read and do as well as QR codes where you can learn more, watch films and listen to music.
Windrush describes the arrival of people from the Caribbean to Tilbury dock, London. They journeyed here on a ship called HMT Empire Windrush in 1948, so beginning the Windrush Generation. These people and their descendants have added to and enriched British culture. Famous sports people like Jessica Ennis Hill, Marcus Rashford, Cole Palmer and many others including famous actors like Lenny Henry, singers and musicians have added to the country’s rich history.
