Sonia Blessing

Championing Hull’s black history

Championing diversity, inclusivity, and equality in our community.

I am Sonia Blessing, the President for Inclusivity and Diversity at the Hull University Students’ Union.

As one of four elected student presidents, I work alongside my fellow officers to represent the diverse voices of our student body. My role focuses on championing equality, creating opportunities, and ensuring every student feels valued and supported. Since stepping into this position, I have developed initiatives that celebrate diversity, collaborated with staff to embed inclusivity into policies and practices, and engaged directly with students to ensure their lived experiences shape our direction.

My tagline “Together We Can” is a constant reminder of the power of community and collective action. It reflects my belief that change is strongest when it is built on collaboration, shared purpose, and unity. As a person of Black heritage and the current President for Inclusivity & Diversity at Hull University Students’ Union, I carry this vision into everything I do.

At the heart of my leadership is the belief that inclusivity is not just about representation but about removing barriers and building systems where all students can thrive. This is especially important during Black History Month, which highlights the need to honour contributions, amplify underrepresented voices, and actively celebrate diversity across our community.

“Together We Can” is more than a tagline it is a commitment. A commitment to creating safe spaces, driving meaningful change, and building a university where every student feels a sense of belonging. Together, we can challenge inequality. Together, we can uplift one another. Together, we can shape a future defined by respect, opportunity, and unity.

We are celebrating Black History Month through these events for students:

  • Wear Red Day: Show Racism the Red Card Photo Day 17th October
